Early cabochon gemstones are known as “glyptic” gem carvings, popularized through ancient Egypt seen in the form of scarabs mostly on blue stones and also seen in China’s carved jade.

Engraved glyphic gemstones and cameos were used as personal signets or seal stones sometimes mounted as a ring, such that an image could be impressed into wax or clay to create a signature.

During the Renaissance, in the 15th and 16th centuries the earliest prevalent use of shell for cameo carving was used. Before that time, cameos were carved from hard stone. The Renaissance cameos are typically white on a grayish background and were carved from the shell.

The Cabochon cut is a method of cutting gemstones into a convex, rounded surface, polished into a simple rounded shape with a flat bottom, ready to be applied into jewelry. This cut is applied usually to opaque gems mostly into an ellipse form, also into ovals, rounds, and teardrops.
